10/2

Hello all!

Today we worked with our short story "Harrison Bergeron" again. Yes, I know they are printed all sorts of crazy--come on, give a teacher a break! ;)

You are responsible for having asked three Level 3 questions about the text. Choose one of your questions and make your claim (example: Kurt Vonnegut is satirizing those individuals who believe giving equal rights to all would turn into a society like that of Harrison Bergeron), find your evidence for your claim by marking and annotating your text using your "Marking and Annotating Literary Text" handout (the neon green one--you can't miss it!).

You should end up with a chart like the ones we did for "Slip or Trip" and "The Lunchroom Murder":

Claim: ____________________________

Evidence: Choose 3 pieces of evidence

Rules/Warrants: 3 Rules/Warrants Explains why your evidence is relevant to your claim (check your "Warrants Examples" Handout for additional help with this.

Conclusion: ___________________________________

Your "Asking Questions" practice homework on the Angelina Jolie articles homework is due on Monday 9/16.

Today we worked on asking different level questions!

Come get the handouts (there are a bunch) from me and I'll explain the assignment.

We also reviewed rhetoric.

**MAKE SURE YOU BRING HIGHLIGHTERS or COLOR PENCILS and a FOLDER?BINDER designated for English, to class on THURSDAY to receive your points!

9/6/13

Here's what you missed:

We talked about the importance of understanding and being able to use rhetoric.

Please review the PowerPoint titled, "Rhetoric PowerPoint" (first slide says, "There are few things in the world more powerful than words..." on Mrs. Clark's weebly site:

http://clark12.weebly.com/powerofwords.html

Then as make-up for missing the commercials we watched in class you need to watch 5 different commercials. You must: Describe the commercial you watched (who, what, where, etc.), decide whether it uses Ethos, Logos, or Pathos and explain, and then identify two rhetorical devices used in the commercial. It may be easier to find commercials on YouTube so you can watch them more than once to identify the rhetorical devices.

It should look something like this:

Description/Summary of commercial watched: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ethos, Pathos, Logos Explanation: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Rhetorical Devices:
1.____________________________________________________________________________
2.____________________________________________________________________________

Remember to do this for 5 different commercials!

See you in class,
Ms. Lewis

If you were absent you need to:
  1. Bring your outside reading book to show me to get approval and points.
  2. Mark your mini-essay with the following: **Note-This is just to help me see what you think each element is so I can plan for what needs clarification, etc. Remember, I did not give anyone instruction on what these elements are, so just do your best to identify each element in your writing. This shouldn't take you longer than 10 minutes.
    1. Circle your thesis/claim statement
    2. Underline direct quotes
    3. Squiggly line under indirect quotes
    4. Box around analysis-->commentary
  3. You missed out on some participation points--be sure to come to class tomorrow so you can make those up.
See you tomorrow!

Outside Reading Book Check

*Don't forget--Your outside reading book (of your choice) is due in class this Wednesday (September 4th) for approval. This is worth points so make sure you have one.

Day 5

Work for the day:

1) Mini-essay/response to an Upfront news article-->written in your composition notebooks.

Objective:

I need to get an idea of where you are--skill wise--in terms of writing about informational text. Thus, today is about assessing your writing skills.

Instructions:

1) You will need to arrange to borrow an Upfront magazine from me.

2) In the magazine you choose you are to find an article that resonates with you--this is the article you are going to write about.

3) Write a response (mini-essay) that uses the article for evidence. Organize your response:
  • you need a claim/thesis statement
  • you need direct/indirect quotes
  • you need analysis/commentary
4) A minimum of THREE handwritten pages (so front and back of the page + one more page).

5) You have one hour to complete the response.

*Please limit yourself to one hour. There is no need to look up any of the terms you don't know. I did not give the class instruction as to what these the different elements (thesis/claim, analysis, etc.) are. I need to see what you already know and what you can do cold, without instruction.

Summer Reading

For those of you who have not turned in your Summer Reading Assignments, you must get both the quotes and the take-home questions assignments to me by Friday, September 6th!

For those of you who did not receive the Summer Reading assignment before school started you only have two weeks left to finish reading the books and comple the quotes assignment, which can be found on the CCHS website: http://cchs.canyonsdistrict.org, click the "Academics" tab, and then click "Summer School", and choose "10 Honors" for the complete description of the assignment.

I hope you all had a great weekend,

Ms. Lewis

Please complete the following:

1. On page 10 of your "Writing Manual" that you received on the first day is the "AACC: Annotation, Abstract, Contextual Connection". Please annotate your article by doing numbers 5 and 9 in the non-fiction section (the bottom half of the page).

2. Answer these questions on the back: One paragraph for each question.

  • What value did you place on technology growing up?
  • What value do you place on it now?
  • What value do you anticipate it will hold for you in the future?

Day 2

Day 2

Today we discussed the importance of getting to know each other in class. Here are the highlights: Avoid awkwardness... no "hey you"s, easier to show someone your work for peer review, and more likely to share thoughts during discussions, and therefore, NO judgements because you know and respect the person you're working with.

All the best,

Ms. Lewis

Day 1

Here's what we did:
  • Discussion of classroom "Guidelines and Procedures". The PowerPoint will be available soon.
  • Discussion of Disclosure Statement-which needs to be signed by both a parent/guardian and by the student. A downloadable version is available in "Helpful Handouts" to the right on this screen.
  • Summer Reading: The assignment that you were to have completed before school started will be turned in with your "Summer Reading Writing Assignment" (these are two different assignments-you will need to come to my classroom to get a copy of this take home assignment), so you may use the quotes you found to aid you in answering the questions.
Don't Forget:
  • You are required to read one outside book of your choice per semester. This can be fiction or non-fiction, the only requirement is that you choose a book befitting an 12th grade student, i.e. no children's books, or elementary or middle school books. You will need to show me, or email with the title and author of the book if you're reading an electronic version, for approval once you have chosen.
  • You need a composition notebook that is just for this class so please come with one every day.
